I wear pants more than I wear a skirt or dress but that that doesn’t make me male. My girlfriend who I call wife sometimes, calls me hubby every now again, that doesn’t make me male. I’m quite muscular and very hairy*, that doesn’t make me male.
But someone else in the same circumstance may call themselves male because that is how gender works.
Not all transgender people transition, there is no threshold for when you are allowed to change whether you can call yourself male or female
It really is as simple as sex=/=gender. The two correlate for almost everyone but the terms do in fact have different meanings and are not interchangeable.

Your sex is determined by your chromosomes, if you have a Y you are male, if you don’t have a Y you are female. Sex in this regard means the chromosomes not genitalia.
XXY people are male in regards to their sex but can be any gender they identify with just like any other person XX, XY, XXX whatever.
A transgender MtF is female by gender but is still a male by sex (that is a hugely inflamatory statement I know but I say it in hopes that it helps someone understand the difference, it is not mean to offend)
Maybe some day people will be able to change their chromosomes but I’m pretty sure the zombie apocalypse will come first.

What you are refering to there is the biological sex, sex characteristics, and as @nebula7 says there’s more to just XX and XY (XXY, X0…) and genitalia is varied.
Gender identity is how you feel, you could feel male or female, some people don’t feel like one or the other but rather female and male at the same time, partially male or female or don’t identify with any of the two. (There’s terms for every type and ofc more)
Then there’s sexual orientation we’re more familiar with it but yeah It’s same thing in that it’s more like a gradient, is what you like: Females, males, the two, with different intensity, you don’t care about the gender or don’t feel attracion for any gender… and this changes trough your life.
Finally gender expresion that’s the blue for boys, pink for girls, games for boys, dolls for girls. How femenine or masculine are you base on the social norms/perceptions, this is where androgynous comes from.
And that’s basically Sexual Diversity, so any combination you can think of regarding every point is not just valid and wonderful but also real. There’s not two people alike ^^
So you should refer to people as they want to be identify as, same with how you want to be called in a particular way, example: Transgender woman

I made a character in battletech yesterday i don’t see what the big deal is. If you pick they you just get access to all available male/female pilot portraits there’s no voice option in the creation section. People are just grossly overreacting like i told @onLooSe yesterday.
