That’s not really “rigged,” though. The community has spoken, and they’ve spoken in a manner I don’t quite like.
Now, I would prefer if Company of Heroes could win a few awards, but that’s not likely-- it’s too old and Warhammer has two massive fanbases backing it. A rigged contest would probably involve Dawn of War III suddenly getting every medal out of nowhere.
For those of you who aren’t aware, last year they gave the award to Dawn of War 2. As much as I hate the game, I love how they gave away the Necron Lord for free as a Last Stand character during the event. The Necrons were by far the weirdest faction in Dawn of War 1, and imo DoW2 is sorely missing them. I think DoW3 is easily better than that game; I’d put it between DoW1 GotY and Dark Crusade in quality, with Dark Crusade basically being the pinnacle of the series.
it is “rigged”
-when you line up a “new” game, vs dead game and “ancient” games
the other years they at least tried to somewhat even out the bias, like including sp battle victories in Rome2 given how CoH2 had a massive playerbase at the time+shorter battles
straight up play time is “rigging” it, the way it’s handled here, the only thing that could tip this is “ancient” players trying for CoH2 -but with recent/current playerbases anything to go by, there is no way not to call it heavily favoured in Warhammer 2’s favour
-which i might speculate and assume is entirely intentional on Sega’s part, wanting people to see it soar in the contest, adding an incentive to “buy in” now to get some extra freebies
straight up playtime is a dumbass “rigged” way of handling such a contest, it’s almost as biased as can be, predetermined almost -with little but a miracle to make it an actual “contest”
-but then, i’m gonna guess the prizes aren’t gonna be all that spectacular in the end for “all” the days
I mean, it makes sense to begin with. Why give out free content for a game less people have an interest in? If Total Warhammer II wins by sheer numbers, so be it; SEGA wants to make this action count for the most players possible.
Also, remember that only people who enter will be actually counted. This event is being carried out officially using data extrapolated with your SteamID, unlike previous years. Only the people actually following this event will count towards the general hours, and once again, it makes sense to provide this content to the largest group of players.
not arguing with the steamId or “audience”,
-but it’s handled poorly and misrepresented
the years of the “battles” (not voting) it might not have been steamID linked, meaning anyone could “enter”
but only the “participants”/owners influenced the actual competition, which had “rules” exactly to try and not make it “so” biased
(and yea i’ll ofc concede with a such contest it’s difficult to remove “all” bias, since it’s a popularity+release date issue, -but at least the tries a little before)
this is just a marketing stunt at best, and not an actual “contest” -at least not in the spirit of the first couple of years
-maybe i’m just grumpy because i’d hoped for “actual” battles this year again
guys, I think yr getting this wrong, I don’t think there’s any contest at all between the games this year; they literally say that the total of all games will be put together and it all counts towards unlocking the total play time, if it reaches that milestone, whoever participated wins, regardless of what he played
As far as that goes, it is a marketing stunt. SEGA wants the world to know that they really care about their RTS franchises, so they give out a ton of free games and coupons alongside a competition for free DLC to get everyone’s eyes on all their franchises. I did notice that historical Total War was dethroned [lol] by Endless Space this year, so they’re definitely broadening their horizons for the competition.
TW WH2 probably will get the DLC, but even as a DoW fan I think that’s completely fair. It does have the most players, so its fans do deserve the extra attention. If free DoW 3 DLC came out, I’m sure there’d be a good 300 people that were happy about it… but with Total War, you’re reaching the majority of your audience, and that’s pretty important.
Wait, somebody said my comment is actually irrelevant anyway…
@harith Completely missed that. That sounds awesome!
lol i read that as “individual” community total (i.e. each game’s community)
but yea you are totally right, nowhere does it actually say that or further hint of any individuality
meaning you are probably right’s it’s not at all remotely a contest this year
and just one of those participation/community boost activity reward thingy
sorta like what starbreeze/payday 2 etc have done before
me too, couldn’t agree more,
now that’s a good and proper marketing ploy i like
(-i still miss the battles tho )
well that’s kinda the issue here, the only one of these games i own is company of heroes, but I encountered game breaking bugs in the two first missions, so that was that… and I don’t rly see the point of getting dlc for games i dont own, lol
very true, ( i don’t even think you can get dlc “preemptively” registered to your account and then buy main game later to get them retroactively activated either)
but in theory, since they are giving “games” too (unless day 1 Vikings Battle for Asgard unlock is just a one-off fluke)
it could be “anything” from their publisher list mayhaps? (“strategy” related maybe?)
tho they might ofc just roll with a bunch of “sega classics” the other days…
i wouldn’t mind all total war warhammer 1 dlc myself, might actually incentivize me to play the thing a little eventually…
y, i think i would enjoy endless space 2, but these games take so much time, and i dont even have time to play all the shit that i already have, if i had unlimited time, i’d get warhammer also for sure, but since that’s not the case, it’s never gonna happen man
Welcome to the world of singleplayer mode in the modern RTS. They always make their players second class citizens through balance patches that ruin campaign dynamics. The only time I haven’t seen this occur is Supreme Commander, as well as most pre-internet age RTS’s. Dawn of War: Winter Assault and the later C&C games are full of these inconveniences.
Personally, I don’t trust Denuvo so I won’t be playing any of these other than CoH. This computer’s already infected so I’ll let Dark Souls III on Humble slide, but as a general rule I just don’t trust any game due to the crippling performance problems that usually follow.
Remember how Mad Max was praised as the “perfect” port? It runs at 14-22 FPS for me.
gotta section off SP and MP stat’s completely in RTS or it wrecks havoc completely
in Total War it was the other way around, because it was focused with SP campaign stuff in mind, made the MP hugely unbalanced, and any tweaks either influenced the SP “too much”, or didn’t have the true “balancing” impact in mp, sorta’ish
blizz did good in separating SC2 SP vs MP i guess. Maybe too good, to the point where all that you “learn” from campaign is almost straight up useless in MP now
ouch…
don’t get me wrong i’m not exactly a FPS snob, and can “endure” sub 60fps okay, but it has to be god dang consistent at least when at 30. jezz,
with such low fps the variance, even in “minor 8 frames” becomes huge, that’s gotta be horrible, wth… -i wonder if it’s even worthwhile to have on a "to play"list for me then, or just scratch it off for the “waste” section…
i’m enjoying this event selection more and more (from a cynic pov)
so i can’t play the other games because of denuvo, and i can’t play CoH2 because of game breaking bug in sp…
-meaning in the end i can’t play any of them, and just have to idle…
I want to join in with this, but I lack any of the games in order to participate, so I guess I’ll be sitting this one out (unless someone wants something in the coin shop for Endless Space for some reason ). can’t complain about 2 free megadrive games though.
I’m in the same boat @Vindace, I have none of these big titles and when I went to the sign up page earlier it made my potato blue itself. I’m just gonna give this one a miss.
Do you like Denuvo? How about having Denuvo constantly out of date or with blackout periods, making the game entirely inaccessible despite your legitimate purchase? What about constant stuttering depending on your specs (seemingly at random, when Pentiums outclass FX 8300s and i5 4460’s outclass i7 4790s)? Maybe pirates getting the superior version and playing on demand?
If you can tolerate these things, I’d definitely recommend Mad Max. If not, understand that Just Cause 3 is a million times worse (plus the game underneath is trash), and keep your eyes peeled for a game made by former Avalanche devs under THQ “Denuvo is trash, please have my cash” Nordic.
