I’ve been thinking about it but could someone explain the point of developers giving away these games? I mean it’s nice and all but they probably don’t get any advertising for it.
I always just grab the keys no matter what it is and probably never look at them again.

card circulation
+bot algorithm increasing “awareness”,
-if a game is “played” a lot/more, steam’s shitty algorithm notices that and pushes it up in terms of discoverability. Since it can’t distinguish from legit play or card farming, and even if people were to use card farming utilities such as archi, it wouldn’t surprise me if the signal sent still gets received and noted as actual “play time”, adding “data” to the shitty algorithm. Making their game slowly pop up more and more on the store
but probably nr1 reason being cards, to get them in circulation
for games without cards, maybe it’s the algorithm thing, or the dumbass dev didn’t realize retail keys doesn’t grant card privileges for a game. Or just hoping a lot of people get in, so when/if cards are granted later retroactively, they have a bunch of people/cards all ready to go in circulation

PS. this of course only applies to “fake” games like a lot of indigala giveaways. Legit devs can ofc just be generous or use it to increase awareness, say if making an upcoming game, or mp needs population etc etc, (unsure if tax write-off is a possibility in certain countries)

Ah yeah some people try to get shitty trading cards, forgot about that. I really doubt even that gain them any real sales though, maybe one or two from every giveaway.

the value comes not from game sales; but trading cards value in gems, direct trades, and when sold on market, as apparently the “dev” get a cut from their game’s items sold on the marketplace, and until cards are “consumed” the same card can be resold again and again on the market, making cents for the “dev” in perpetuity
but it all adds up, cards is a big racket, big enough industry to have spawned so many thousands of “fake” games purely for cards, even if “we” don’t use cards, they still somehow manage to make enough money from it to profit and make the business worthwhile to continue
+a dollar or two here from someone purchasing the game for real is still “profit”, if main goal for creation was card farming. And sometimes it can be surprising just how many somehow for whatever reason actually pays for real for some of these games, -because humans and brain and all that…
so i guess win-win, you give “nothing” away for free, only to gain something, no matter how small, in return someway or another, as if out of thin air

ps.
what year on this graph do you guys think trading cards were introduced?

I didn’t know they got a noticeable cut, that explains things a bit. I will still grab the shitty games though, even if it’s just to see my library number go up.
