For my wife’s birthday I taught myself a new piece of music that I thought others might also also enjoy. She really likes The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch:
In the lower right, in the Hell scene, we find a musical score… zoom, enhance!
The music predates modern staff notation and is more of a mnemonic for someone who already knows the music than something that stands on its own, so every musician will interpret it a bit differently. The relative order of the notes is clear but the starting point is arbitrary (though educated guesses can be made) as is the length of each note. Here’s my own interpretation on three instruments:
