Depending on your interpretation, it also can refer to purgatory (though it is way less fun that way).

As I said, depending on the interpretation, the idea of it as an aspect or level of hell is much more ‘classical’.

Can we all just marvel at the audacity to put TRAITORS at the 9th circle? Gotta love the mental gymnastics we humans use to justify punishing them harder than SORCERERS, the practitioners of actual witchcraft and those that worship the devil. Anyone religious able to explain the logic?

Totally unofficial, the Divine Comedy is, well… comedy? Not official religion, more like satire. That’s the reason behind its popularity, because it offered a different take on religion and even jumpstarted a new language.
