That CFAA thing seems interestingly complex and stupid. On one hand the cop clearly did something illegal, just not THAT particular illegal thing. Sounds like a badly written law that clearly needs to be rewritten to better focus it’s effect and whoever decided to charge the cop should probably just have done so under some sort of corruption heading rather than data breach of some sort.
In the end I’d go with this being a good thing as a seemingly stupid law has gotten better regulated even if it means that a criminal goes unpunished as a result.
