No problem at all, it is a different system than most games. Trying to remember as best I can as I haven’t played in awhile, but yeah so you log into their site to download the game and you only have to login while in game if there is an update and then you just change your name so there is no conflict there. The way we did it is, I would play just with the Steam version and my brother would play the DRM free version and we never had any problems as long as the names were different. The only thing that sucks is having to login for those updates to keep the versions the same.

And when you say “log in to update”, you mean log into the website to manually download the updates or does the game prompt you itself to log in for automatic updates?
Also, if already bought on Steam, how does one go about attaching it to the website for that DRM free copy?

There is a login in the game that handles the update, no need for the website after you download the game. If I remember correctly it does not prompt you to update, you just have to know. Or you will know when you cant connect to other games lol. Now if you bought the game already, you just go to https://www.factorio.com/ and attach your steam account, very easy and really wish Rimworld had the same system. Again no problem at all for the questions.

If you get it on GOG you get a DRM free copy anyway, so just send that install file to your friends. I mean this system is not really set up with the intention of being shared, this isn’t a 2 “licenses” for the price of one. So if you’re going to share the copy with others then they might just as well sail the high seas.
Looks like GOG gives you a “CD key” of some sort which you can use to register your copy with a factorio account, according to.

Multiplayer requires a log in detail, even on GOG. So unless it’s got the ability to have 2 log ins at once for the GOG version too, then I wouldn’t want to risk buying it there.

See with awesome developers like this, that really isn’t the case. They have openly said you can share DRM copies, and Rimworld is the same way especially since they give you like 7 copies. Factorio even has the option to turn off online checks, same as Minecraft. Now I understand that doesn’t mean to start openly sharing this to random people or everyone you know, borderline piracy then, but using it as a family share type of thing seems acceptable to these type of companies. I have 4 gamers in my house, it is going to be very rare when I buy 4 copies of a game, reason I love these types of games and services like game pass.

Small rant on toxic activism
I hate having to see uncensored videos or images etc of animal abuse just out in the middle of no where, in discussions not even about animals. I get it, I do. This needs to stop. But I don’t want to see how pigs are walked to their death and they know it because they’re beautifully intelligent creatures. I don’t want to see how chickens are stuck in a cell literally only as big as they are, unable to move. I don’t want to see cows being lifted by cranes to be killed in the most horrific ways possible. Not wanting to see it doesn’t mean I don’t agree it’s wrong. It just means I know I cannot change anything, and being forced to see such disgusting things knowing that makes me have such anxiety that I don’t even want to live. In their process of trying to show people who WE are monsters, those same people act like a different kind of monster.
Why can’t people get that? Why do they have to force this knowledge of inhumane treatment on unsuspecting people? I’m just a poor woman in the middle of nowhere trying to survive off $200 every 2weeks. There’s nothing I can about this, not with my money and not with my time, no matter how much you show me it. It will take decades of policy reform, and that won’t ever happen when these factories make money. And no alternatives will come to challenge that money farm because production is costly right now and too expensive for the poor to maintain.
When the aliens come to wipe us off the face of the planet, their #1 reason will probably be about how we treated the other species of this planet during an “enlightened” age of knowledge and technology.

Sounds like PETA propaganda, rest assured that while factory farming is definitely not great and poultry/egg farming is certainly bad in many places, it is nowhere near as bad as PETA’s direct lies makes them out to be.
