The OT Thread!! Post Here When You Feel The Need!

I actually have a little bit different theory when it comes to GPUs . Same GPUs , and i by that i mean same model and same brand so for example Gigabyte RTX 3060 are simply not made up to exactly same quality standards , so called ‘silicon lottery’ i guess.

And because casual GPU buyers only understand and care about two numbers (at most ) , that’ be amount of VRAM and Base and Boost frequencies of the card manufacturers just overvolt their GPUs so that even lesser GPUs ( ones which lost ‘silicon lottery’ ) would actually boost up to that advertised frequency , even though some of the cards could easily reach same numbers with lower voltages , reducing heat and power usage .

Fixed that for you.

That’s exactly what happens. AMVIDIA sends over the GPUs that meet spec and the AIB partners will bin them further of they wish. As part of those binning processes you’ll get ones that just barely meet the spec or you’ll get ones that far exceed it. The reason they do this is because it gives far greater yields.

I think Gamers Nexus kinda goes into this on one of his videos. Not sure which one.

I was just getting into that channel when that happened. I was surprised as to how entertaining the chann is and I hope that he can rest in peace.

I would like to see that marketing on GPUs… Stating an actual FPS on the box… … oh the lawsuits…

fair. I guess the two numbers would be series number (e.g. 3060) and price tag for regular joes. It’s the semi informed (watch tech tubers) that care about 1 number - FPS.

So…

Summary

I won’t say how I saw them, but I saw the leaks of the first three episodes of the Wheel of Time. Now unless they have thrown out these episodes and redid the script/shoots, it is a rather depressing and disappointing look into the show. I was very worried since the creators said nothing is similar to the books beyond the names and places. That means no religious themes (because everyone must be taught religion EBIL), major character changes, none of the incredible dialogue…nothing.

What I saw was devastatingly horrible and disrespectful to the book and its nature. I was so sadden by what I saw that a large part of my desire to read the books was stamped out almost entirely (I still need to buy a few more of the books).

I can only pray that my most favorite series of all time is not being done dirty like this, that those episodes I saw were horribly rough shots, because I know that when this goes wrong–and it isn’t an if–we will never get a faithful adaptation of the series.

This is going to be another Game of Thrones, only the start won’t ever be faithful and it’ll just be a quicker death for the series.

To be fair, i don’t see it as a series that would be a good fit for television/movie adaption if the target group is fans of the books. It’s probably better to make a show for people that have never read the books. Time will tell i guess, i know several people that are excited for the show.

I have never heard of Wheel of Time before and have absolutely no idea what it’s about, but I’m pretty sure it’d be possible to make a loyal adaptation that also appeals to newcomers.

I’m unsure about that, it’s a very high fantasy type affair which really does not tend to fall into the tastes of the general audiences. They managed some how with LOTR by throwing endless amount of money at it so that the long paragraphs of descriptions and world building became details on screen. If anyone read the books and thought Tolkien was long winded they’d find themselves choking on the first chapter of The Wheel of Time.

It is a wonderful series of books in many ways similar to that of LOTR as he created a hugely well designed world which he spends a lot of time describing to you. Both in terms of scenes, landscapes and scenarios but also goes in depth of the political, religious and magical natures of the world which makes it feel like a complete and functional place. Not just a back drop for the heroes to have adventures in.

The books are also fairly sparse in adventurous hijinks and much the same way that the band of hobits start off by hiding and escaping from most early encounters there is very little in the way of heroic grand standing going on and the major part of the first few books is about trying to travel incognito. This is a hard kind of content to keep your average TV viewer interested in.

There then lies the danger of trying to turn this into a visual medium. When you have such a well defined setting to work with you have to go to great length to satisfy the reading audience’s idea of the world which takes a lot of effort, skill and money. Meanwhile you can’t throw in to much extra “adventure” into the story every 45 minutes to keep the attention span of the average TV viewer.

That’s really sad… :frowning:

I will just stick to the books then, rereading the series instead of watching the show. I mean, I guess it’s just too much to hope for the TV adaptation to stay in line with the novel.

But why do they get priority over us, the fans? At this point, it isn’t even like the books, it is new content. They could at least have the decency to call it fanfiction based off of the books, and not an “adaptation”.

There are series that can and have been adapted well enough, without being a straight up insult to the original. Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones (minus S8), Forrest Gump, The Godfather, The Princess Bride, Schindler’s List, The Shawshank Redemption, The Witcher (I thought it was fantastical), Outlander, Alias Grace, and Watchmen. The Boys is also good, if I can put down comics.

I think this just falls more along the lines of two things; the creator did not care for the source/and or its themes or they just picked the wrong guy to helm it. And I’m starting to think it was both.

It is definitely possible to do. Despite the horrible last season, Game of Thrones managed it pretty well, in terms of sticking close enough to the books but diverting when necessary. I still do not think GOT is any perfect example of an adaptation, but decent enough that it should be the standard if higher quality adaptations are not possible.

I got the very obvious feeling during the episodes that they just simply didn’t want to. The character changes (massive), the weird rituals, the theme removals (pretend the guy wasn’t a catholic and that the book was stepped in religion I guess?) etc just showed that the creator did not like the books, despite his claims. He removed the entire character of it.

It is. I can only hope that the people who were reviewing this episodes were completely and utterly put off by those episodes, and they have been redone entirely. I doubt this though, because the sample group they picked…were not readers of the series. :unamused:

If they sampled us, they would have gotten their ears chewed off.

I wish Robert Jordan had made stipulations, legally, about his series. If it is to be turned into a movie or some sort, the core themes of the book, settings and characters must not be altered. That would have saved his beloved series from this mess.

Maybe that is their target audience, I suppose, like many mainstream TV series. Why prioritise over a smaller group that, in their eyes anyway, are not going to take center stage as their audience. I haven’t seen or even heard of that show though but if it is a one to one adaptation, fans might still find it boring to watch and be disappointed.
There have been examples where adaptations are drastically different from one another and still being successful. How To Train Your Dragon, for example, from what I can tell could actually work on its own instead of attaching itself onto an existing IP. But said changes made it one of the most beloved series in animation.

I do think this is likely to be the core issue, though. If the creative team is not well fit, whether it be their (sorry to say) lack of skill, too much limitations by higher position people and more, then it probably is the more damning sign of a poor product.

Point, I don’t want to think what the budget was to animate the Beatrix Potter series. It was so beautifully and charmingly done, but that’s no mean feat. LOTR movies - dang. The front money. O_O SO much talent in making those prosthetics alone, much less weaponry, etc. Sigh.

You don’t fool with the classics people love, I tell you what.

I’ve not read the LOTR books. I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the movies.
Why? I’ve noted a keyterm on several occasions, and such applies to this as well.

There’s a lot I’ve not had access to. A lot that’s flown under my radar.

@Amyrakunejo I got lucky with the LOTR Trilogy. The Logos II had it for sale on one of the occasions it stopped here. Also, my public library had The Hobbit.

I really don’t know if the ship operates any more. Most of my reads were either free on Kindle or second book store bought.
