Personal preference, I really think that the Xcom ones look amazing, but then the steam profile doesn’t showcase the good pieces!
The best backgrounds are like the Borderlands 2 one that knows how to have ‘dead space’ that still has a cohesive image.

I love that Grim Fandango picture because, despite being a whole picture, it deliberately has a middle space that isn’t important. At 1080p, the sidebars have just Hector Le Mans on one side and Manny/Meché on the other. That sidebar alignment is what makes and breaks backgrounds.
Bonus points for a fez AND sinister pose.

I agree, although the discovery of the seed (floating cube, #spoilers) is such a beautiful background that despite it not showing well on my Steam profile I still kept it for many months (over a year maybe?) But yes, in general the best are those that manage the void well.

personally i'm using this from bl2 on my profile, back from my "bl2 phase", and it's somewhat nicely busy, yet toned down colour-wise enough to not be too eye-catching for me
it’s just so peaceful and tranquil to look at i think
from Defy Gravity, (neat little game btw)
but as far as “favourites” go, i don’t really think i have any, 
much to many backgrounds for me to browse through,
-and my mind would short-circuit trying to pick out new ones to use, because too many beautiful ones to pick “one” from, so i just settle (for now) with what i selected a long time ago…
“not changing things” is much easier
