Spring Cleaning: Revisiting old purchases

@LordAo I actually booted the 4th one up over this event. Actually had a blast trying to beat Insane mode and failing horribly. xD

@Fraggles I grabbed a copy, actually two if you count my bfs unused one. IF ANYONE WANTS IF JUST MESSAGE ME (Galactic Civilizations 2) Been considering both heavily lately. Have pretty much gone with Tryranny and Penny Arcade’s on the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 for the last few days. I think the handholding really would help me as a “nongamer” at least as far as the FPS category is concerned.

@Shalandir Oh I read, you’re very articulate. Have the ability to put thoughts to words that my clouded mine doesn’t afford me most days. The strategy genre in its entirety both fascinates and exhausts me. I get myself hyped up and ready to take on managing a team, town, army, etc. only to exit out a few hours in because I just cannot handle the stress that I cause myself with overthinking and perfectionism. I generally make simple pleasures difficult on myself without intending to. -_- Anywaaaaays, Endless I want to play SOO badly but haven’t snagged a copy yet! It caught my eye a couple years ago and has sat comfortably on my wishlist since. c: I look at Stellaris now and then and just cannot come to an opinion on it.

@Enki I am obsessed with pirates and I have no idea why. I look books and games featuring assassins and pirates both. I have read more assassin books than I know what to do with and I don’t know when that interest even developed? I don’t have any desire to even upset a person, let alone kill them. I think it must have to do with giving an identity, personality, complexity to someone who should be seen as vile. I’ve actually been rewatching my favorite anime today, Hunter x Hunter. I went down a youtube rabbithole about villians/heroes and the backstories, emotions, motives of each in several different stories and genres. (children’s, shonen, drama, etc.) After a few videos I ended up on “Super Eyepatch Wolf’s” video about what makes a good villain. He nailed it, character development is essential to my enjoyment of media. If a character is flat I don’t understand why someone even bothered to take the time and effort to create the story if they don’t make each and everyone in it a living, breathing person reacting to both internal and external stimuli. I’m not big on stealth gameplay, it may go back to the overwhelming pressure I put on myself as I mentioned to @Shalandir above. I always think I’ll like it and end up feeling anxious, it’s a bit depressing. But the way you explain the series makes me want to explore the settings because exploration and world building are so much of what I love about gaming. (and how much better can you world build than by using…well the world we’re in. :stuck_out_tongue: ) Maybe I’ll try to play it on a day where I’m actually relaxed.

@CptMold I googled both and neither really look like they have much charm, just typical additions to genres that are already stuffed full of uninspired games. I’m sorry it wasn’t a better buy. :frowning: You are actually the only person besides my brother who I’ve ever heard mention that game. I played it and had a blast but didn’t make it very far and have always been curious of what happens with the story and gameplay. Ooh what channel would that be on youtube. I used to frequently review books and have been wanting to get into game reviews but just feel awkward and have no idea where one starts. I have seen that game here and there lately and didn’t realize it was related to Mars: War Logs. You actually sparked an interest in it by that alone.

@MrBonesWildRide Terraria has taken several of my hours. Weirdy I’m the opposite. I’ve never played Minecraft and have always kicked myself for it. It looks like so much fun but I just don’t start playing…ever. Why? I don’t know. The sales always bring me crawling back to Gaben.

My computer is forcing an update soo I’ll reply to everyone else in a minute

I’m assuming the “Two games that don’t look like they have charm” are Bulletstorm and Vanquish. Well… Bulletstorm really did try. I found it to be very flawed, but the weapon variety is amazing and I can appreciate any game with a center around Mighty Foot. It just has a few flaws that really ruined it for me.

Vanquish though? It’s made by PlatinumGames. As in, this Platinum:

As far as The Technomancer goes, it’s a parallel to Mars. It begins a lengthy amount of time before Mars, early enough for a few guest appearances even, and War Logs begins to cross over with the game around Act 3 (otherwise, it’s a completely different plot thread taking place in Abundance). My biggest issue is the fact that The Technomancer is by far their most ambitious game, in terms of open-ness. The linear maps are gone-- it starts out as a traditional level-to-level Spiders RPG (albeit with very long levels), then breaks this model shortly after with a travel system between these maps. It’s a great addition, but also makes the game feel padded. I’d imagine a second playthrough would be rather dull, considering I was already feeling burnout by the time I finally reached the final area’s merciful, linear path.

Still, the worst aspect is the fact that Mars’ setting is actually hurt by the dynamic time system. I was highly disappointed to find that the dynamic day-night system was purely visual, and only relevant in certain main quests early on. There are certain areas that should be killzones in the day and safe at night, but instead, these areas don’t actually hurt you. This would have made the game more interesting, made certain missions outside of major cities more urgent, and given the rest system a more practical purpose-- all within the context of worldbuilding.

Some Technomancer Survival tips

I still did enjoy The Technomancer, but I would definitely know what you’re getting into beforehand. I also strongly urge people who try it to give ALL stances a good try-- if you spread out your upgrades, you are expected to use every power optimally to compensate for the fact that you will have weaker skills. If you can weed out styles you are uncomfortable with and find the stances you would enjoy with more power, you can tailor the game to your own style. Peresonally, I played Bound by Flame almost always with Daggers because I was coming from Mars: War Logs-- this dodgy-backstabby combat preference is best suited for Rogue.

Also, Technomancy goes well with everything. DO NOT NEGLECT IT! It has some gamechanging abilities later on, including the new feature of abilities that will limit your total Technomancy power but passively stay on your gear at all times.

I really do hope that Greedfall is good. They’ve come such a long way from Mars: War Logs, and they’re just that one game away from a breakthrough title.

I’ve been throwing a few of my videos into the forums here and there, but mostly they were just 10 second s___posts… most of them are actually unlisted and meant only for the thread where they were relevant. I’ll be honest, I don’t have anything worth seeing yet.

Oh, and my YT channel banner is on my Profile in Chrono. It’s actually unfinished artwork that was meant for YouTube’s odd banner aspect ratio, and it was thrown together hastily under the assumption that I would replace it when I had more time on my hands. …I haven’t.

-has that “man” ever made a game that wasn’t just some repressed sexual fantasy of his ? :man_shrugging: (be it the game or the “making” of it)

No, not yet. I’ve also seen reports that QuanticDream is a hellish place to work, where you’ll be stuck crunching hours WAY over time for the sake of making sure his shower scenes look completely as they should.
