Final Fantasy VII Remake: Square hopes it's out before FF's 35th aniversary!

There’s some new proof that confirms my speculation of Final Fantasy VII Remake being the new FF XV, in terms of hell-ish development length.

This scares me, because this then also means that FF VII Remake will only release ‘episode 1’ in 2022/2023. :fearful:

But hey. We might be seeing something new at Sony’s E3 conference next month. Guessing maybe a gameplay trailer showing the slums of Midgar with all the shops.

Exactly! That’s what’s bananas about it. 2 and a half years ago they showed the first gameplay trailer. It looked like a great mix between FF XV and Kingdom hearts. Seemed pretty done to me. But here we are. Expecting it in 3 more years minimum, if we are lucky.

In all seriousness I can never tell if I have heard about a final fantasy game or not because the roman numerals throw me off… So every time I hear about one I go: ‘oh a new final fantasy! Good for them I suppose’.

You have to at least admire their tenacity to staying numerical, and not giving any mainseries entry a subtitle.

Well there is the mess that is XIII with XIII-2 and lightning returns and FF 12’s HD remaster came with the subtitle “the zodiac age” But I guess they claim that those are not “main series” games.

Final Fantasy 11 and 14 are considered main series though and has the subtitle of “Online” so, ah ha!

I’m hoping to finally get into FF7 when this comes out. It’s hard on the eyes to play the old one. Won’t do it.

I tried playing the old one kind of recently I think? Maybe about 2 yrs ago… it’s amazing the things I notice now that I didn’t before… And I agree, it’s a bit hard on the eyes at times with the strange polygons and angles…

I mean the FF X and XIII ‘series?’ Is of course because they all center around their own world. But Lightning returns do seem like an oddball, you got me there. FF 12th’s HD remaster probably didn’t look new enough to them.
With FF XI and XIV, i’m guessing it’s so people know it’s ‘different’ from their other rpgs, with it being mmoprgs instead.

I feel like I hear about a new final fanasty game coming out like every week and every time I’m like “Another one wow”
Because I can’t really tell the difference between them they are just Final FanastyXXXIIIIIIIIII to me

That’s of course understandable. I find that they designed the characters well with the console limitations the PS1 had, and made some memorable and pretty charming designs.

Hey! That also reminds me. Have anybody tried the Steam version FF VII? I’ve been considering getting it and need to know if it runs well. Controller support, resolution? Unlike the Chrono Trigger pc port, which apparently was just the Mobile port of the game. :grimacing:

I believe the steam version of 7 is one of those ports of a port of a port sort of thing, but it’s alright, no glaring issues. But it’s definitely not the original PS1 version or the original PC version, which is a thing that also exists.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but is it weird that I really don’t give a hoot about any remakes or re-releases of FF7? I mean, I played it back in the day on the PS1, re-played my discs on my PS2, and then set it aside for other JRPGs that made further advances beyond it. Sure, it was a fun game, but I can’t help but think that the legions of fans that are clamoring for an updated version of the same story are just viewing the series through nostalgia-colored glasses.

It’s totally reasonable, given how many games, and how many good games there are out there, ripe for the plucking. When FF7 was the biggest thing, there was not so many games available, and everything had to be purchased through retailer at pretty much full price. While FF7 has such a wide following, it was because it was one of those games that revolutionized gaming and brought JRPGs to the forefront of many western minds. Thus it always is going to be accompanied by much fanfare, be it released again in 2023, or done again in 4D, 16K, with Full-Body Bio Immersion in 2035. But for a lot of people, if it is a game you have already played multiple times, it is fun just to follow up with the news and updates instead of planning to play it again. But it is also fun to compare the newest game to the ones in your memory, with long loading screens and CD instead of what we have now. If nostalgia is enough for you to keep in a pensive nature and purely speculative, it is reasonable to look at the news and move onto the next game that you have wanted to play but have not yet, instead of going back to an older game with so many followers.

I think your view is totally valid, and more than reasonable.

for me it never struck that star eyed fan chord. I quite disliked it, for a few, but “big deals” to me
i loooathed the turn based fighting/“menu combat” as i called it… it was so annoying to me, and i never even completed it myself, traded it in for some shitty star wars fighting game (boy did i get had on that deal :smile:).
And i remember the constant combat music especially was painful to me, like muting it painful. While i could appreciate some of the things the game did, the constant reading i hated too (mind you i was a kid), so despite liking whatever story i did pick up, i felt constantly interrupted -by the game

so when you had games like tomb raider, crash bandicoot, gran turismo, Oddworld, etc etc and tons of other great games that year, (the late 90’s were awesome for games btw, there was really no shortage back then despite everything), i just discarded ff7 or anything else that didn’t grab and hold my attention span “right” -which admittedly was mostly some sort of regular “action’ish” game then

i did learn later that it wasn’t just ff7, but parts of that jrpg format that just didn’t jive with me, i tried again later with ff9(i think?:thinking:) because cute af, that little wizard hat guy looked awesome, but since it was the same format, i could never get through it.
I could “endure” to watch my roomie play it years later tho, and he didn’t mind the “menu combat” at all, but he did skip the reading, so i probably missed fair bits of whatever game i watched then.
(i even remember getting mad at Suikoden because of the “ambush” combat… srs, you walk down the road, and suddenly, without warning you had to fight someone… again and again and again… no i wouldn’t have it! :triumph: :blush: :smile:)
…probably haven’t touched that style of jrpg format of games in ages, “scarred for life” :man_shrugging:
i did eventually find it sorta funny that those games “annoyed” me so, considering i had no issue with other types of games with partial similar elements,
like Fallout 2(lot of reading there), Xcom, or even Star wars Kotor’s turn based combat even didn’t phase me the slightest, in fact i looove other games’/turn based “genres”.

i don’t know… there was just something about those games that didn’t catch me, :thinking: :flushed:

I love/loved Final Fantasy VII. And to be honest I still do…I’d happily stick it on my PSP again and dance the merry dance of polygonal uglies. Crisis Core was interesting for a while but ultimately didn’t really feel worth the hype as it didn’t really improve the lore. Dirge of Cerberus was bad. Advent Children was ok?

However, there’s no need for a remake/remaster/re-imagining. I’d much rather they take whatever revamp of the game systems they’re envisioning and conjure up a new game, Final Fantasy or otherwise. But…that’s me, someone who’s played the game in it’s original format. The real question is whether the story and the characters are worth polishing up for a new audience. And you know what…possibly they are. Square-Enix loves FF7 and perhaps exposing a different generation of people to the game that brought them kicking and screaming into 32 bits and repopularised the JRPG is worth doing.

It’s just not for us. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

Now Konami on the other hand…pull your finger out and sort out a Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake redo!

I never really played FF7 myself. Back then I was pretty heavily into fantasy of all sorts but when I saw FF7 I was really rather disappointed. What the hell? This isn’t fantasy, they’re fighting with guns against giant robots in huge cities? Get out of here!

So I played FF6 instead and I’m still very happy about that choice, then worked my way backwards in the series. 6 and 5 was just so much better than 7 in every aspect, both are far prettier in it’s mastery of pixel graphics than the crude 3d models at the cutting edge of a new generation. FF7 didn’t age very well either so by the time I would have been able to forgive it’s transgression towards the fantasy name it was even more atrocious to look at in comparison to every other option I had to play.

So while I’ve tried a few times to get into it, FF7 has just never really managed to appeal to me. So I am cautiously optimistic and interested in seeing what they pull off with this remake.

6 is unquestionably a prettier game than 7, and certainly looks better today, but the large cast of characters and the bugs which plagued the release (I can’t believe that the evasion stat had no effect in the SNES game) meant that I didn’t get on with it as well as 7. I also really dislike Gau. Conversely, I felt much more empathy towards Cloud and the Avalanche gang, and the first time leaving Midgar was just magical.

It’s difficult to separate nostalgia from reality when remembering old games, but thanks to the FF games varying things up between releases I feel that each is worth trying. It’s just that all of the things that FF7 did that were so mind blowing back then aren’t new any more.
