Destiny 2 FREE on Battle.net

y but dude, many games have deluxe or whatever versions, but a dlc with deluxe versions … ??? !!!

because activision got so greedy, they want to force you to buy the “deluxe” to get the expansion -that’s not gonna be available individually (at least for bo4 as far as i understood the initial statement)
so you have war of the chosen that follows the old “true” expansion model, and serves you a full game in its own right -that just requries the main game (that’s cheap on sale) but not mandatory
vs acitvision that serves you carved up playbase dividing semi-“faux” expansion content -at full price as if a main game in its own despite being not only less, but also still requiring the main game (which never sees more than a 50% sale -destiny 2 being the first outlier in many years) and is mandatory to continue “onward”

So i’m gulty of playing the crap out of Destiny 2 in my free time the past couple of days (it’s probably for the better they don’t show in game hours in the launcher) and i have to say i enjoy it, It’s fun. (even though it has lots of downsides)
Sadly i realized that without the dlc you’re stuck to certain level and content, which brings me down a bit knowing there is a lot of stuff i can’t get my hands on currently.
So far i finished most of the main things, still a lot to do, but, i’m curious how long can the base game keep me hooked.

(there’s still the other two characters i can start of course)

the game is actually unplayable without the expension, so by giving the game for free they will hook some people and they will be forced to buy the expension

exemple:
base game = level max locked at 20 out of 50,
light locked at 280 out of 600(i think) etc.
raid and assault are 340 light minimum so you cant even do the late game content, you are locked to the campaign and free roaming.
base game content = 6 hours of playtime.

Eh. That’s kind of like saying the base of Fallout 3 forced you down to LV20 max when in reality it was just that a DLC raised the cap. It’s more content on top of the base game.

Still, the pricing is a bit… yikes. Activision sure loves half-baking Destiny’s base games.

Can you at least do the vanilla raid without any of the dlc? Or did they raise the light level for that too? I played on ps4 and did raid on release and it was super fun, but hella boring after that because of the lack of content besides pvp and redoing the raid for gear I didn’t care abt. Since its free now though…:thinking::thinking::thinking:

I think I do recall an issue where base end game content got locked away because of the raise on the level cap by one DLC, can’t say which one as I don’t remember what it was.

comparing a solo game with an only game is apple to oranges, and like i said in my post, it prevent you form any end game content. meaning that you do the campaign and you cant do anything else other than freeroaming without any goal

when the game got out, before any dlc, end game content was at 140 light, now the end game is 340… out of the reach of non dlc owner

every single dlc for every single game limits that content to dlc owners only…

I rly fail to see how getting to play the campaign for free, in addition to some other stuff, is a bad thing

how many AAA games have u gotten for absolutely free lately???

this is a win/win cuz everyone gets to try the game for free (the whole campaign for that matter), and whoever wants to cuz they love the game so much can then buy the dlc and further their experiences in the additional content, which brings in money for the company.

this very much depends, “on the game”
since i haven’t played destiny 2, i couldn’t possibly say how much “substance” there is in just testing the waters in the “old” main game

but a comparison that could be made, could be WoW for instance, which have had various degrees of “free play’ness”
problem is it doesn’t/didn’t really give a decent picture of the game, because the “endgame” had shifted so dramatically ahead, and even tho “endgame” might not be “endgame”/necessary, (depending on what "endgame"means for someone), in something like WoW, there can be a monumental difference from the first “90%” of the game, to the last 10% where all the content is focused, balanced, and the “actual” gameplay resides.
in WoW, you sure as sht don’t get any real sense of the game if you only own the base game, or if just some of the old expansion, and much further from reality would be the free lvl 30 trial or whatever it was.

even if Destiny 2 expansion functions just a fraction of the same, this free base game could be all but “worthless”, giving you 2 weeks of quest/grind gameplay, without remotely showcasing what the core game is about or how it’s gonna play out (or potentially tax you #rpgGrindFests :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)

not saying it(Destiny 2) is like that, but i could easily see how it could be the case
^but i also have a predisposition to a negative bias because i don’t have a lick of faith in something with Activisions hands on it

dude, i get what yr saying, but that doesn’t change the fact that u get to play the single player campaign of a 60$ game for free though

i think my point was more in the sense of, depending on the game, it might not be the campaign you get to play “anymore”, but just the run up to it, -if the expansions has shifted it far ahead enough (like wow had for instance)

and as for value, since in the 60$ pack you do get +3x “expansions” now (and one of those currently go for 40$ single), it could be well argued it’s no longer remotely a 60$ game (and if we nitpick subjective"ness" of value we could argue if it had ever even really been :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:)
-and other AAA "old"60$ in such sense, (true), single player titles have been handed out for free before too

not saying it’s not “nice”, most freebies are appreciated, just saying given the nature of this type of game, it could be what amounts to a “taste” and not actually a real/“full” game handed out, -if X base content was “locked out” for only the expansions now (i’ve no clue if they ever “fixed” that)
(again i couldn’t say because i haven’t played Destiny 2, my point was just that i could totally see the point @bellegueule was making)
and for that, -not really something to cheer with arms up for like some gracious gesture from Activision’s behalf, when it’s (obviously) just meant to get people in to pay for the expansion/ingame stuff
(nothing wrong with marketing, just sayin i’m less impressed with this “generosity” than i was with Space Marine freebie, and that’s even 7yo )

hm k, i get what yr saying; the thing is, i consider this 100% marketing ofc, so im not “impressed” with anything; i merely insist that for the consumer, this is a net positive, that’s all; i don’t see the negative side of this, so i don’t get the criticism either

totally, that’s why i’m always happy when we get free “sht”, even actual :poop: /indiegala stuff or just halfbaked humble stamps. There will always be a chance someone can enjoy it, but if it wasn’t free they wouldn’t get that chance, so it’s good :+1:
only reason i’m “weary” is from the gaming side, i could see it potentially being a case of the “wow’s” -“jaded from experience”. But without any actual foundation, since i didn’t play Destiny 2, even that might be an apple to oranges comparison too.
And doesn’t even really matter if “i” don’t like destiny, or even if it was a case of the “grab 'em by the expansions”, if someone ends up buying the expansions because they learned they liked destiny, that’s still good for them, and doesn’t hurt “me” either just because i’m not playing.
so not a bad thing it was given out
(+i’m just predisposed to be cynical and look for potential grump too :joy:)

@M00 No one (at least from my point of view) is criticizing that we got the base game for free, @bellegueule’s original comment just implied that the game was basically incomplete and you needed the expansion to fully play the content from the base game, not that it was a bad deal per see.

Upon a bit of investigation (meaning two or three Google results), this is pretty much the stuff that you have access to, I don’t know what any of it means, but it sounds good I guess :man_shrugging:?

Taken from reddit(with some editing):

With the Base Game, you are limited to the following:
-Max Level 20 and Light Level 305.
-The four base locations (Earth, Titan, Nessus, and Io) and their respective Adventures.
-Access to the Main Campaign (16 Story Missions).
-6 Strikes (One of which is a PS Exclusive).
-Access to Nightfall.
-Crucible: Quick-play and Competitive.
-Seasonal Events: Iron Banner and Faction Rallies.
-Social Spaces: The Farm and The Tower.
-Raid: The Leviathan.
-Clans.
-Private Matches.
That’s all you have access to with the base game.

Much of whatever this is apparently became inaccessible when the Curse of Osiris DLC came up, leaving only the campaign missions and free roaming part of the game for the base game players, apparently Bungie did fix some stuff up as detailed in this article, so now you have all the things up there available to play with, at least according to that reddit user.

well that’s at least something, :+1:
all i remembered was the outcry that (some) previous main/base content got gated off, tho since i was never interested i didn’t care for any follow ups :slightly_smiling_face: good they didn’t “completely” mess that up

all those stuff has a light requirement of 340 minimum(to be sure i will check tonight when i log in),
you can still get in but wont be able to hurt the enemy.

it’s still a great game if you have the dlc, but without them it might give a false impression that the game is empty.

Take it as what it is, a super amazing and great demo, maybe the best demo of all time if we ignore there are free games (like Warframe). Man, I miss demos being a common thing. I played it a bit in the last few days and I can assure you it’s pretty neat, and while you don’t get the end game as you explained perfectly on point, you can fight in pvp with no problem in almost equal ground (you would have to choose some of the cool weapons from vanilla not having access to some new ones, but the numbers are the same, so you can pretty much dominate. I’m not sure how usual is that practice among multiplayer games with level to this day but that’s pretty neat, I mean, at the very least you’re getting a cool pvp shooter for free where your disadvantage is arguably never greater than 10%, at most.
