Some times, yes it is prudent to do so. China is so economically powerful because we forgot that they are essentially politically diametrically opposed to most things we in the west value and take for granted and have happily traded with them despite this and allowed them to rise to a hugely powerful position.
They have for some time now, but much more visibly recently been using that powerful position to bully and silence people and companies outside of China. They are using their economical influence to change how we create our media, even managing to stop games they don’t like from being sold or even made in the first place.
They project their world view with force upon the rest of us which is something I have personally experienced a couple of times now, things that I enjoyed and desired have been changed or removed because of Chinese influence.
So when I say I don’t want to give money to China it’s not merely some lofty ideal about the power of voting with your wallet. It’s personal, it’s real and it’s happening.
This is of course not blame I can put down on any one Chinese person’s feet but the state of China is the fault of all the Chinese people and to some extent also western people who have accepted, excused, funded or ignored an oppressive authoritarian state.
Change has to happen to China or change will inevitably happen to us.
Changes always happen and they happen for good, they happen for bad. A lot of it is outside of our control.
By the way, you sound like George W Bush in a more extreme situation:
You’re either with us, or against us
Is there no allowance for a neutral stance at all? Not everything is black and white and the logical fallacy is clear within that statement.
I feel saddened that M00 felt the need to delete his message, despite a lot of valid points there within.
There’s a lot of things going on over in China that we may feel morally abhorrent about but this is also happening elsewhere.
Bringing the conversation back to the games themselves and the developers, and fairness or not, I still stand by that making this small economic decision one time will do little to change the entire atmosphere, but to generalize it to such an extent is saddening as well.
Does it matter to you that I have so many family members who are trying every day to live peaceful lives, to live happy lives, to live within a system construct outside of their control in a way they know best? Probably not, but it matters to me.
For me it absolutely is, very personal.
I just want everyone to be kind and considerate to each other through the problems that we deal with. Everyone has stubborn edges and will not budge for everything. But we need to work as a global community to bring about changes that are important to all of us to co-exist in a meaningful way.
Sorry, yeah, it was just the immediate message that popped into my mind when I read what you wrote.
I wasn’t trying to make any parallel comparisons and saying that the situations are identical in anyway. It was just the way you phrased that one line.
I know I can get defensive about China sometimes because of the personal connections. I definitely disagree with a lot of the decisions from a national/government stance and what they have done, don’t get me wrong. I just have those immediate familial reasons to try to also consider the first-person perspectives.
There’s a reason that my parents turned down pretty cushy positions in education so that they could come out to the US and bring me along, to get me out of that system as they know it so I could have a better life. I feel like they struggled in their own ways most of their lives and they continue to feel somewhat alienated in this society that they are now a part of. We are all US citizens and they are still not understanding a lot of what’s going on and why things are the ways they are. So instead of living in more or less luxurious lives within that system, they got out and are still working hard, all of that happened because a decision they made so that I can live better. What did I ever do to deserve that? I still don’t think I do. I don’t ever think they made the wrong decision, and I am happy they made it for me, but I always feel a twinge of guilt every time I think about what they could have instead of what they have now.
