the goal is to generate a maximum of free publicity at a minimum of cost, and even bad publicity is good publicity for the game
so u give the game for free: lots of game press coverage and word of mouth about that
yr servers can’t handle the flow and everyone is pissed: lots of game press coverage and word of mouth about that
the goal is that after 5 min most ppl have already forgotten what happened, and so next time they see the game in store, the only thing their mind remembers is, “oh, didn’t i want to get this game?” cuz that’s simply all they remember cuz most ppl online have the memory of a goldfish (most, not all, and ofc not most ppl who actually spend time reading and talking on forums), and then a percentage of them actually buys it, and so u have increased sales
that’s my theory at least (of what they’re thinking)
I’ve claimed almost everything they’ve given away, taking their stuff doesn’t support them. While it might be a tiny droplet out of the endless Tencent money bucket I can siphon to game developers I’m doing my part trying to make sure at least some of that Chinese money goes somewhere useful. With the potentially flawed understanding that Epic has claimed that they actually pay the devs for each free copy claimed.
It sucks this is only going to be on Epic Games. I really enjoy the series. Now I have to wonder if it is time for myself to cave and at least make an account to claim things, or wait and see if it performs so bad they have to release it on Steam too. And risk having to pay for it.
