A typical epub is around 500kb to 1MB. A typical basic ereader has around 4GB of storage…let’s call that around 3.3GB for functional storage space.
That’s a lot of books even without expansion via memory card.

But still, that’s something pretty much commonplace for portable devices nowadays, even if unneeded, the fact that I can expand the memory should be a given, at least to me anyway.
