Crazy News Stories

Well it’s clearly labeled 2017 so it isn’t new and it’s not a meme because a meme is
The point of memes themselves is to be a repeated behavior and that’s not happening here. Maybe at a stretch “making up news stories” could be a meme and make this the result of meming.
But, I hear you say…
Which is just skirting the popular bastardization by the throngs of “normies” who invaded meme-culture failing to understand it and subsequently ruined it. If we accept this definition then the word loses all meaning and we should just call them jokes, they’re visual jokes or plain told jokes in the case of twitter/tumblr post screenshots or “greentext”. Everything anyone ever posts to anything on social media gets called a meme by someone and they’re almost always wrong.

The best modern expression of memes today I begrudgingly accept is the formulation of bizarre or amusing hypothetical situations with or without a reaction appended. Amusement often derived by how unthinkable the situation is or the mundanity of the response that it makes the proposed situation seem even more extreme by comparison. Alternatively the opposite is also often presented, mundane every day occurrences given an over reaction to the point of ridiculousness.
These are memes because they’re a creative output that follows a pattern repeated by enough individuals within a community.

Anyway this is a news story, fake though it may be.

yes indeed, i’m talking about the second definition, and as much as you may disagree with that, it’s even in the dictionary (i checked the very same one before making my point), as you just illustrated yourself, and so it is what it is, and it is indeed a meme

since when is an obvious fake-news story, a joke, an actual news story?

Has this been reported as news by any actual news outlet?

you’re actually arguing that anything reported, regardless of the form it takes, its intention, or the authenticity of what is said is “news”

in that case, is a news outlet, cuz it reports on a new game deal every day

and in that case, every single twitter account is also a news outlet, as well as every facebook page and everything else online, cuz all it takes for that is that they have “reported something new”

Who cares? Is news only news if it’s provided by a company?

I reported on it, today!
Jeremy Kaplowitz (the guy in the picture) wrote it in 2017 AS a joke news story.
Whatever it is, it looks like a news story so for the purpose of categorization I put it in the thread about crazy news stories.

Definitely not a meme.

By no means have I even insinuated that. At most I’m saying that anyone CAN write news, without being a news outlet.

:joy: that’s some next-level shit you’re on, dude

I may be a bit late, but I also believe that parody news stories should be in their own thread, not this one. I’d appreciate if a mod would go back and separate them (IIRC the first parody one was about the general proven to hate everyone equally).

I agree.

You all set up a new thread and tell me which posts to move and I will do it. I am not going through over 200 posts. I don’t have the time to research it.

Don’t even worry about it.
We’ll just stop having fun so there wont be an issue, a separate thread for a handful of spoof posts is entirely pointless.

SURE! It was a test…

it’s always awesome when robots get in the christmas spirit ahead of the new year’s uprising

Spider Fossil was a Crayfish with legs painted on

Original article (locked behind a paywall, but you can still read the abstract):

Florida man awoke to discover another Florida man sucking on his toes, police investigation is… afoot.

Oh wow.

yet, there were ice ages both before that and after that

it almost seems like Earth goes through cycles of global warming and global cooling and has been doing so long before humans were around and started driving cars and shit

Sounds fun

Yeah these ring 0 anti cheat systems are a terrible idea, worth noting that Black Desert Online uses a similar thing XingCode which also do not uninstall itself and keeps running forever until you take a weed-whacker at your system folders.

Also worth pointing out that Riot is not the first company to try to use these things. Sony tried to do it to prevent people from copying DVDs and that was a real shit storm.

Ironically enough my Sony DVDs probably run decently enough (well the Sony Home Entertainment logo stutters but peeking back makes it run normally) compared to my Isle of Dogs DVD on VLC. Or maybe that dvd was defective to begin with.

Are their harmful ?

I have Black Desert Online sitting in my Backlog , been wanting to try it out for some time now once i have some time for it , but if it does install some harmful shit along side it i might as well just remove it from my acc all together.

Well that’s a good question and the answer is we do not, can not, know. Anyone who asks the question tends to get shouted down by people ridiculing the idea that people should be concerned about privacy and cyber security at all.

The few decent threads I’ve managed to dig up on this sheds some light at least. I think it is safe to assume two things about it, it uses the USN Journal to keep track of all changes done to files and folders on your hard drives and it sends SOME sort of data back to the developers of the anti-cheat program.

What is sent back and what they can or can’t do with it is unknown but largely pointless to quibble about. It’s spyware and you have to trust that there’s no one malicious or incompetent at the other end of it. Considering that ALL major companies providing online services have been breached at one time or another that’s really not a gamble an ant-cheat system should make on my opinion.

My personal take on it is that I probably already own more games than I will have the time to play in my life time and so I do not have to trust BDO or Tencent owned Riot with this sort of thing in order to play their games.
